ABOUT THE TOUR
Only once a year you can enjoy the blossom of Rhododendron Ledebourii shrub, symbolizing the culmination of Siberian spring. During the short blooming period be astonished by the beauty of pink and lilac clouds of fragile petals and carpets of spring flowers such as fawn lily, anemone, and lungwort. Celebrate the beginning of new life at must-see sites of the Altai Mountains known for their rhododendron blossom shrubs. Perhaps you will be able to witness the unique struggle of spring and winter when sudden polar vortex bring blast of Arctic air with frost and snowfalls.

Rhododendron Ledebourii
Rhododendron is endemic for Altai an Sayan Mountains and the north-eastern Mongolia

This semi-evergreen shrub keeps its leaves for winter by twisting them in a straw

In August and September you can watch the secondary blossom of the rhododendron

Most common are rhododendron shrubs with pink and purple petals. But sometimes you can find plants with rare white colored flowers

1 DAY (April, 29)
Welcome to Altai
Driving distance - 75 km (46 miles)
Accommodation - TurSib Hotel, TWIN room in a timber cottage in Russian style with en-suite WC&shower
Full board meal - breakfast, lunch and dinner at the restaurant of the hotel

Arrive in Gorno-Altaisk, where you will be met on the arrival at the airport and transferred to TurSib Hotel. Spare time and leisurely walking along the bank of the Katun River. You will have time to admire blooming Rhododendron shrubs in pine-tree forest and on the rocky bank of the Katun River. In the restaurant of the hotel you can enjoy Russian traditional cuisine.
2 DAY (April, 30)
The Katun River Valley
Driving distance - 150 km (93 miles)
Accommodation - TurSib Hotel, TWIN room in a timber cottage in Russian style with en-suite WC&shower
Full board meal - breakfast and dinner at the restaurant of TurSib hotel, lunch - in the cafe of Elanda Lodge

Today we'll explore the rocky banks of the Katun River drowning in pink clouds of blooming rhododendron. After breakfast we'll enjoy the driving tour along the Katun River. We visit famous rocks, known as Teeth of Dragon, Chemal resort, Patmos Island in the middle of the Katun River. We will climb at the viewing point in Che-Chkysh spot, also known as Valley of Spirits, and finally admire grandiose Teldekpen Rapid on the Katun River. Afterwards we'll return to TurSib Hotel.
3 DAY (May, 1)
Chuisky Highway
Driving distance - 280 km (174 miles)
Accommodation - Inegen Lodge, TWIN cabin with en-suite WC&shower
Full board meal - breakfast at the restaurant of TurSib Hotel, lunch at the cafe of Uch-Enmek Lodge, dinner at the cafe of Inegen Lodge

Today we'll follow the spring along the most beautiful highway of Russia. We'll pass through the Siberian pine-tree forest on the Seminsky Pass. Probably, there will be snow on the top of the pass at the altitude of 1717 meters (5633 ft). We'll observe the Altai Mountains from the bird's view on the top of the rocky Chike-Taman Pass. Afterwards we'll plunge into the blooming Rhododendron shrubs on the rocks near the village of Kupchegen and capture the stunning Ilgemensky Rapid on the Katun River. We'll visit the place of power on the confluence of the Katun and Chuya rivers and finally descend to Inegen Lodge from the picturesque pass.
4 DAY (May, 2)
Towards the Snowcapped Peaks of the Altai
Driving distance - 270 km (168 miles)

Full board meal - breakfast and dinner - at the cafe of Inegen Lodge, lunch - cafe of Alps of Chuya Lodge

This morning we'll drive towards the Severo-Chuisky Ridge crowned by glaciers and snowcaps. Make sure your camera is charged up! After one-hour trekking to the top of windswept mountain we'll capture one of the most significant panoramas of the Altai - glittering 4000-meter (13,000-ft) Aktru and Kurkurek summits and winding silver band of the Chuya River. You will enjoy the first signs of spring - demoiselle cranes and fluffy pasque flowers. On the way back to the Lodge we'll explore small scenic turquoise lake in coniferous forest. The lake was named Geizernoye (lit. geyser) due to gurgling caused by air bubble on its bottom. Overnight at Inegen Lodge.
5 DAY (May, 3)
Towards the Argut River Mouth
Distance - 40 km (25 miles) by bus, hiking - 6 km (4 miles)
Accommodation - Inegen Lodge, TWIN cabin with en-suite WC&shower
Full board meal - breakfast and dinner - at the cafe of Inegen Lodge, picnic lunch on the bank of the Katun River

We'll greet the sun and afterwards drive to the mouth of the hard-to-reach Argut River. On the way we'll stop to admire and capture rhododendron blossom. After 2-hour walking along the old rocky path high above the Katun River we'll finally reach the mouth of the Argut River. This river is famous as one of the last habitats of snow leopard in the Altai. Afterwards we'll enjoy the picnic lunch and fishing on the bank of the Katun River. The evening will be marked by acquaintance with native culture. A special dinner will be served with traditional Altaic meals based on cereals, milk and meat products. Afterwards you will enjoy gripping transcendental throat singing of a kaichi, a skillful performer of native epic songs.
6 DAY (May, 4)
The Chulyshman River Canyon
Driving distance - 210 km (130 miles), 6 km (4 miles) hiking
Accommodation - Ezen Lodge, TWIN room with en-suite WC. The Russian bath house is available on the territory of the Lodge
Full board meal - breakfast - cafe of Inegen Lodge; packed lunch; dinner - cafe of Ezen Lodge

After breakfast we'll drive to the Chulyshman River canyon. On the way we'll pass through the thousands of years of rich nomadic history while visiting the open-air gallery of rock drawings Kalbak-Tash. We'll capture the scenic Lake Kidelyu on the top of the Ulagansky Pass at the altitude of 2321 m (7615 ft). In Pazyryk spot we'll discover burial mounds of tribe leaders of the Scythian Age. The unique artifacts from the graves are exhibited in the Hermitage Museum. Afterwards you'll be astonished by breathtaking landscape of the Chulyshman River canyon from the top of the windswept Katu-Yaryk Pass. After walking down from the pass we'll reach cozy Ezen Lodge on the bank of the river.
7 DAY (May, 5)
Departure to the vicinity of the airport
Driving distance - 460 km (286 miles)
Accommodation - Finskaya Dacha Hotel, a timber cottage with en-suite WC&shower, single occupancy
Full board meal - breakfast - cafe of Ezen Lodge, lunch at the cafe of Uch-Enmek Lodge, dinner at the restaurant of Finskaya Dacha Hotel

After greeting sun on the bank of the Chulyshman River we'll start our way back along the Chuisky Highway. You will enjoy the gripping excursion to the center of native crafts Altai in Kupchegen Village where unique handmade souvenirs are available for buying. Up to arrival to the hotel we'll check-in into cozy timber cottages and enjoy dinner. Your late evening is free for leisurely walking along the bank of the Katun River and watching the rhododendron blossom.
8 DAY (May, 6)
Flight to Moscow
Driving distance - 20 km (12 miles)
Meal - packed breakfast
Packed breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. At 7 a.m. you will be transferred to the airport of Gorno-Altaisk for returning flight to home. Farewell!

TOURIST EQUIPMENT AND GEAR
Clothes
May weather is extremely contrast in the Altai Mountains. You can enjoy a really hot summer one day, and suddenly experience the snowstorm and low temperatures next day. Having warm, windproof and waterproof clothes is a matter of safety and getting satisfaction of the tour. You should pack into your travel bag some T-shirts, fleece jacket, membrane jacket/windbreaker, trekking boots, comfortable shoes for hiking, warm hat and gloves, fleece trousers, windproof trousers, sport socks, cap or kerchief, sunglasses, swim suite for bath house, rubber slippers.
Photography gear
The more lenses you take, the more opportunities to capture WOW-shoots you will have. You will need a long-focus lens or telephoto lens (for example, 150-600 or 200-500), wide-angle lens (fisheye, 14-24 or 17-35 etc), standard lens or zoom, for example 24-70, 24-120, speed light. Recharger, additional memory cards and set of filters (graduated and polar). Don't forget to take a tripod for morning, evening and night shoots.
Equipment
Backpack or bag for photography gear, rain cover for backpack, waterproof bag for documents, backpack for clothes, headlamp with additional batteries.

Documents, pasport, visa, money and card, mobile phone and recharging, medical insurance.
Medicine
Preparations for motion sickness in transport, individual medicine. May is the high-risk season of tick-borne encephalitis transmitted by the bite of several species of infected ticks. It is highly recommended to vaccinate in advance to prevent tick-borne encephalitis.
Personal Higyene
Sunscreen, hygienic and sunscreen lipstick, toothbrush and toothpaste, shampoo, soap and bast.
